The Cryptorhynchinae is a large subfamily of weevils (Curculionidae), with some are found in most zoogeographic regions although they are most diverse in the Neotropics, Australia and Oceania.. They are distinguished by having their rostrum (snout) backwardly directed between their fore coxae in repose, and fitting within a protective channel that usually ends in a cup-like Class: Insecta. A phylogeny is presented for the western Palaearctic representatives of the weevil subfamily Cryptorhynchinae using a combination of phenotypic and genotypic characters. This phylogeny is the first for the extremely species-rich Cryptorhynchinae to use molecular data (mitochondrial CO1 and 16S as well as nuclear ribosomal 28S). The results of this study show the need for molecular tools within Cited by:   Abstract. Rapa Island in SE Polynesia hosts a remarkable adaptive radiation of small, flightless weevils in the genus Miocalles. Sixty-seven species are knownCited by: Research on Cryptorhynchinae has mainly focused on selected faunas (Lyal, ) or individual taxa, e.g. on the Miocalles Pascoe of Rapa, Polynesia (Paulay, ), the group of genera related to.

Marquesas and Henderson on the east and through the Australs to Rapa and Marotiri on the south. More than 40 species occur on the small island of Rapa alone, and the complex of species (undescribed) occur-ring in the Marquesas also is extraordinary. I have described 18 species from Tahiti, but that is only part of that fauna.
